Nelson), Eve Miller, Barton Lane & others. Rolling introduction titles. 15:02:42 Railroad construction camp & track laying. Coal burning steam passenger train thru pasture & past forested hillside. CU newspaper “Lincoln Elected”. Engineer and ?? (Barton Lane) talk about violence coming to Kansas. Engine stops for dynamited small bridge. Men on horseback on ridge waving, fire rifles at them. Men back to train; CU wheels backing away. 15:05:37 U.S. Capitol & General Winfield Scott talking to railroad man, Johnson, asking for military guard for workers; refused. Army Engineer, Capt. Nelson, loaned to railroad; look at map of Kansas Territory. 15:07:45 Construction site w/ supervisor, Cal, & daughter Barbara, eating,finishing lunch & have routine arguement over guy’s pipe. Interrupted by telegraph, Barbara takes down message. “...hire biggest crew possible & start laying track...” They argue about engineer being sent; Cal is going to leave but decides to stay. “Don’t start talking about the war...” Take train to town, MCUs 15:14:23 Frontier town, Nelson arrives w/ suitcase & into Kansas Pacific RR office, telegraph operator reading paper; exchange. Operator says “telegraph operators are even harder to find than track layers.” Nelson leaves, walks across to next building w/ suitcase, past men on porch. They, North & South cowboys, get into fight, throwing & punching each other. 15:16:34 Nelson turns & joins in. Crowd gathers, Bruce & others arrive. Nelson & Cointreau (from South) shake hands, Bruce’s crew boss who was fighting him says he’ll quit. Continued...
