Night & horseman riding fast, knocks & enters gang headquarters. Rider says railroad hiring, guy tells some of the guys to go in & sign up. Boss, Cointreau, says their job is to stop the railroad, not to start war.
15:20:47 Daytime: Town & signs: Kansas Pacific RR. Construction men wanted; w/ line on wooden sidewalk. Bruce signing them up, Nelson takes over from Bruce. Bruce asks guy to bring rifle, be a railroad guard. Men filling out forms w/ quill pens of turkey feathers (?).
15:23:11 Construction & laying track. Moving ties, man stumbles & falls on another. Nelson fires him. They fight & Nelson tells men to shoot the guy if they see him around again.
15:26:14 Night, Cal does math in railroad car to figure number of ties needed, daughter corrects him,. Barbara pours coffee, argues Nelson trying to take away his job. Nelson comes in to talk. Explains how he thinks they could save time w/ a couple of derricks. Bruce: “We’ll get along better if you quit calling me sir, this isn’t the Army Mister Nelson.” Nelson tells Barbara what he needs; then says he’s not there to take her father’s job away from him. She says he is; he says some day she’ll understand & then they can be friends.
15:30:44 Evening, Nelson & Joe talking by RR about posting night sentry. Nelson says you must have been in the Army; he says he was under Scott in Texas Campaign. Cal & Smokestack watching.
15:31:50 Wires & telegraph signals. Man taking message down at Southerners HQ for the order for supplies. They want to get the dynamite.
15:33:13 Laying ties, Nelson by tent w/ slide-ruler & figuring how to avoid tunneling.
15:34:32 Supply train arrives w/ dynamite at back of rail car. Unload dynamite boxes. Derrick on wheels moved up, man ducks off & gets bottle. Sits by engine & drinks, man starts fight (diverting attention), 15:37:15 Rifleman in rocks; fires & sets off dynamite blast. Man killed. Man quits, others do too. Some stay.
15:38:54 Nelson finds cartridge casing: “Somebody’s determined to keep this line from going through”. “This is worse than war, in a war you know who you’re fighting.” Continued...
