04:17:22 ARVN soldier past mouth of cave used as fortress by NVA / Viet Cong forces. M-60 gunners set up; CU ARVN on field telephone; others on cliff above. Explosive charges & CS gas going off.
04:19:48 Soldiers on ledge above mouth of cave, firing M-16's, M-60 gunners firing, M-79 & explosions, troops rush to mouth of cave during assault.
04:22:14 Slate. 4/15th Commander, Cpt. Mai, talks w/ several staff, & the MACV advisor, Cpt. Partitt, discussing assaults on cave. Position on mountain top from which fire is being directed against the NVA position. Man wounded in face by secondary projectiles treated; loud speaker being used to ask for Chieu Haoi's. (Reponse of sniper fire not shown).
04:24:40 Chinooks dropping fougasse / explosives onto mountain & cave positions. Smoke & napalm burning from top of rocks from another ridge. Advisor using PRC-25 backpack radio, working w/ ARVN interpreter to direct drops. Explosions of fougasse & rockets from Cobra gunships.
04:27:08 Slate. More fougasse dropped / burning w/ heavy black smoke.
04:28:32 Advisors ducking behind rocks due to heavy sniper fire.
04:28:54 Chieu Hoi loudspeaker being used, ARVN reading speech & playing music on radio while fougasse is dropped. ( The photographer regrets a great variety of shots was not possible on rolls four five, due to sniper fire as mentioned. Cobra gunships were finally called for supressive fire to allow the photographers and advisors to leave the observation post.)
