MS Senator Vandenberg & Senator Tom Connally, committee members. 21:21:47 SOF: I think it is of the greatest importance that in considering this program the people, as well as the Congress, understand the critical world situation. We have had the comments several time that we won a victory but we have still not won a peace. It goes much further than that. In some portions of the world there is more fighting now than there was during the war. You are aware of that. There is a political instability, there are efforts to almost change the face of Europe, certainly as we understand & desire, contrary to the interests of mankind and the advancing civilization which we desire. The whole situation is critical in the extreme. We happen to be, very fortunately for ourselves, the strongest nation in the world today; certainly economically & I think in most other respects. There will be requirements in this program for certain sacrifices, but I feel that when you measure those sacrifices against what we are fighting for ones get the very much better idea of the necessities of the case. But there is no doubt whatever in my mind that if we decide to do this thing we can do it successfully; and there is also no doubt in my mind that the whole world hangs in the balance as to what it is to be in connection with what we are endeavoring to put forward here. Thank you. Cold War; Anti-Communism; Near East; United Nations; 1948; Mar48; Diplomats; Diplomacy; Sold at per reel rate.
