NOTE: Lucy the Margate elephant was built in 1881/1882. It was patented in 1882 by James Lafferty & was a six-story building; he built the Coney Island elephant afterwards which was 12 stories before burning in 1896. Lucy was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Lucy was struck by lightning in 2006 blackening the tusks.
