07: Titles. 07:43:17 American plains w/ grass blowing, cut bank showing depth of top soil. Covered wagon crossing plains behind oxen. Couple & two kids; meal around cooking fire & oxen walked to stream & grazing. 07:45:04 Sod house w/ grass roof. SOF Older couple look at campers & take pie & melon to them. Travelers stand up & greet. Talk about coming from Illinois to settle on new land claim. 07:46:32 Sunset, sitting around campfire & father tunes violin or fiddle. Plays Old Susanna. Wistful looks. 07:47:20 Covered wagon & walking towards claim; cattleman rides up says “its no good for farming”; they argue. “I guess you’ll just have to live & learn.” 07:48:25 Arrive at claim stake & small dugout hut dug into ground. 07:49:10 Walking thru ripe corn crop. Boy & father plow w/ oxen, turning under grass. Sod being laid for house. Neighbors help to build house, trimming sod & installing frames for windows & doors. Plowing fire guard & burning weeds. Woman cooking in sod house. 07:51:02 Kids picking up buffalo chips, manure & carry bucket back to house. Cutting bundles of corn stocks w/ neighbors. 07:51:27 Father returns w/ new horse & circuit riding minister. Ride up to sod house, meets wife: “I’ll have dinner ready soon & you’ll be more than welcome.” Talk about school for the kids & the unchanging land. Wife brings out fiddle & husband plays Oh Them Golden Slippers.
