Couple & two kids; meal around cooking fire & oxen walked to stream & grazing. 07:45:04 Sod house w/ grass roof. SOF Older couple look at campers & take pie & melon to them. Travelers stand up & greet. Talk about coming from Illinois to settle on new land claim. 07:46:32 Sunset, sitting around campfire & father tunes violin or fiddle. Plays Old Susanna. Wistful looks. 07:47:20 Covered wagon & walking towards claim; cattleman rides up says “its no good for farming”; they argue. “I guess you’ll just have to live & learn.” 07:48:25 Arrive at claim stake & small dugout hut dug into ground. 07:49:10 Walking thru ripe corn crop.
