New Diplomacy - Ike and Khrushchev to Exchange Visits 12:18:05 Interior: President Eisenhower enters, reads press release / statement to journalists (SOF): “The President of the United States has invited Mr. Nikita Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR to pay an official visit to the United States in September. Mr. K has accepted w/ pleasure. The President has also accepted w/ pleasure Mr. Khrushchev’s invitation to pay an official visit to the USSR later this Fall. Mr. K. will visit Washington for two or three days, and will also spend ten days or so travelling in the United States. He will have informal talks w/ the President which will afford an opportunity for an exchange of views about problems of mutual interest. On his tour of the United States Mr. Khrushchev will be able at first hand to see the country, its people & to acquaint himself w/ American life. President Eisenhower will visit Moscow & also spend some days travelling in the Soviet Union. This will provide further opportunity for informal talks & exchange of views about problems of mutual interest w/ the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. On his tour of the Soviet Union President Eisenhower likewise will be able to first hand see the country, its people & to acquaint himself w/ their life.
