Three Chinese men (made-up white actors) in laundry bow to shrine with incense. One touches the others’ braid & they bow to each other. Old man leaves w/ young man; other returns & sobs.
21:13:45 Cowboy & girl on porch; see Chinaman w/ laundry basket being nice to child who’s fallen. They laugh at him.
21:14:21 Title: ‘The pagan chink gets a taste of the result of two thousand years of civilisation’.
Men stop him walking past Red Rose Bar & Post Office & try cutting off his braid, chase him & shoot at him,laughing & kicking him. Cowboy & girl intervene stopping them. Sarcastic bowing by men. Cowboy & girl by creek overlook.
21:16:42 Chinese man in front of Chinese laundry w/ sign; gives girl flowers. Cigarette smoking Dandy appears, smells the flowers & takes a flower from bouquet causing cowboy to argue w/ her & walk off. Dandy takes girl by river and woos her, Chinaman follows.
21:18:08 Title: ‘Mongolian Gratitude -- The Chink hears the dandy’s threat and resolves to save his friend.’
Cowboy & dandy have fist fight but quickly broken up. Chinese man listens & leaves.
21:18:53 Title: ‘Another hold-up of the registered mail carrier.’
Postman arrives, reward poster put up in front of post office. Dandy & Chinaman & cowboy at poster.
21:20:05 Title: ‘The Chink suspicious follows the Dandy.’
Chinaman hiding in bushes follows & sees Dandy put on bandit mask & hold up man on horse, then changes clothes in woods. Chinese watches him.
21:22:09 Title: ‘The Chink’s supreme sacrifice makes him forever an outcast.’
Dandy drinks & falls asleep against tree. Chinaman cuts off braid & ties him up to tree with it. Chinaman pulls pistol & brings culprit to town; cheered by others. He looks in mirror & is devastated he has lost his braid.
21:24:27 Title: ‘The Chink makes unlooked for use of the reward.’
Chinese man goes to girl, then cowboy. Returns to laundry and starts to leave w/ washboard & laundrybag. Cowboy and girl find goodbye letter & reward money from Chinaman for bridal present. They kiss as he watches, then he leaves town.
