Tells Booker she wants him to get an education. 18:37:49 CU 1865 Proclamation ending slavery. CU feet walking; Booker in schoolroom after emancipation, working at salt mine in West Virginia. Defeatist attitude of older men “you just a black boy, ain’t no key to open that door to you or any of us; its a White man’s world.” 18:39:04 Booker walks into Hampton College office, asks to enroll after walking miles. Principal General Armstrong & school secretary put him to work for his board. 18:40:19 Booker as a grown man after graduation, receives letter from General Armstrong asking him to come back to Hampton to teach. Talks w/ Armstrong about teaching. Booker: “I believe its the route to the second Emancipation, the real freedom from the slavery of the ignorance & superstition.” Armstrong tells him he’s recommended him for another job teaching Negroes in Tuskegee, Alabama - no one else wants job. CU telegram dated 1881 approving Booker for job. 18:42:27 Booker teaching at pulpit of old church w/ Black holding umbrella to shield him from leaky roof. INT plantation bought by Booker to serve as school house; secretary brings in a student’s mother to see him - not happy about his teaching methods. Booker explains he is trying to teach them something useful for the community.
