Pt 1 of 3 Brief small-town street scene. Shop window ‘Quality Electronics’; INT store clerk and teenager Tony behind counter - girlfriend Dorothy into shop, drops off radio to be fixed - Tony’s father Al, owner of shop, asks Tony to run errand. Father finds old radio Tony agreed to fix cheaply for old folks home - “he’s always a sucker for some hard luck story”. 13:10:47 Tony arrives at affluent house of Mr and Mrs Emery to measure up for hifi stereo system to cheer up their young daughter Sharon who can’t walk - Mrs Emery takes Tony into Sharon’s room - girl is bedbound and miserable. Mrs Emery tells Tony about Sharon’s accident - she ran her over in the car while Karen was cycling outside house - wringing her hands as she tells story. 13:13:24 Tony at dinner w/ parents discuss Tony being so busy fixing radio for their Mission in New Guinea. 13:14:30 Tony and father at work installing stereo at Emery house - Sharon called for lunch, comes in in wheelchair and sees Tony saying Grace before opening his packed lunch; “Mother says God’s too busy to listen to prayer, that’s why I’m like this” - Tony explains about Jesus and promises to lend her his tape recording of Bible stories. Mother sends Sharon into kitchen; tells Tony he has a lot to learn about life & family doesn’t go to church any more.
