John Greenleaf Whittier Pt 1 of 2 12:49:11 Large New England farm house in fall. 12:49:27 Boy & family listening to teacher reading (SOF) poetry in front of fireplace; reading Robert Burns & talking about Quakers, pacifism & anti-slavery. Teacher loans book to Greenleaf, sister asks “What’s A Poem”? Reads to his sister. 12:51:42 Years later reading newspaper, sees his poem published & reads announcement to his father. Father: “Put your paper away for now; we have work to do, we are farmers.” 12:52:58 Ext. of school, then cut to Greenleaf & Cousin Mary talking on bench under trees about possibilities of working on newspaper etc. and their role as Quakers. 12:54:33 Farm house, as above. Greenleaf working at desk as Editor of New England Weekly Review w/ superimpositions of his writings. In house as editor of Abolition newspaper, The Liberator, talks w/ Publisher in farmhouse kitchen. 12:55:40 Whittier told he will win seat in Congress. “Are you not a Quaker?” Publisher recites Greenleaf’s poem about Martyrdom.
