Flame ignites; CU w/ title over Shipyard Fire And Explosion Hazards - A Demonstration By Ralph W. Netterstrom. 09:41:24 Firebox w/ flames; lecturer snuffs out by closing lid of laboratory trainer. Lecturing, explains three elements needed for fire - fuel, oxygen, heat. What causes the three to interact; shows the different properties of gasoline, fuel oil, lubricant & how they burn. Vapor needed to ignite rather than the fuel themself. Shows ignition of vapor after candle extinguished. Gasoline vaporizes easily; or heated kerosene or heated lubricant ie flashpoint. 09:52:49 Shows that vapors are usually heavier than air & flow so will ignite far from source point. Demonstrates w/ cotton saturated beaker of vapors running down a trough & ignite at bottom. 09:55:08 Talking about need for proper mixture of fuel & air for combustion. Compares on chart the range of flammable limits of various petroleum products. MCU looking & talking to camera next to flame. 09:59:08 Combustible gas indicator demonstrated, a meter w/ testing probe by filling beaker w/ gas. 10:02:52 Small flame & larger shown in laboratory firebox. GOOD effect. 10:04:25 Talks about scale built up in tanks which hold vapors that are given off w/ heat. 10:07:01 CU of hand drill w/ sparks showing as it runs. Talks about static electricity created by gasses flowing thru ducts etc. 10:10:06 CU of face talking: “Remember this that man, like a flame, dies w/o oxygen.” Shows oxygen indicator to test compartments before entering, CU. Illustrates oxygen causing steel wool to burn; uses cigarette to burn holes in cloth & effect, rapid burning, if clothes have gotten saturated w/ oxygen by blowing off clothing w/ acetylene torch. 10:17:00 Warns about tanks filled w/ inert gas being tanks w/o oxygen & will kill. Summary. Lecture Film; Science; Health; Safety Instruction; Welding; 1950s (?);
