Titles. Dramatized scenes of Christopher Columbus’ childhood in Genoa - collecting wool w/ brother, listening to shipbuilders’ stories about Marco Polo (SOF): “but sire, if the ocean is flat, why do not the waters run off its sides?” - told world is round. Columbus as young man studies w/ brother, shows him new trade route to Cathay China - receives letter from scholar offering support in theory that world is round. 22:51:34 INT castle of Don Juan of Portugal. Columbus refused gold for expedition - too dangerous - insists on seeing King. Don Juan reclining on sofa w/ bowl of fruit - still refuses money. Columbus w/ young son on way to France by burro, meets a friar & invited to rest at monastery - friar offers help. 22:54:51 Church. Columbus’ meeting w/ King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella of Spain on throne. Courtiers try to dissuade King & Queen from offering Columbus money. Columbus tells them if successful he would want to rule new lands under their authority & share of gold etc. - King laughs at him. 22:57:23 Columbus & son traveling to France - rider catches up to tell them Queen Isabella orders his return to Santa Fe. She decided to support his expedition. Columbus oversees construction of new ship paid for by Isabella; crew board ship. Map of Atlantic Ocean, voyage superimposed; leaving Canary Islands. Unhappy crew about to mutiny; Columbus hit over head, but he spots leaves in sea, sign of land nearby. 23:01:09 Columbus & party arrive on shore of new land w/ Spanish banners; ceremony naming it San Salvador. CUs Columbus & crewmen, natives watch from bushes then emerge, offered trinkets. VO re Columbus failing to find expected gold & died without realizing he had discovered America.
