Keeping Neat And Clean (1956) main title missing Encyclopaedia Britannica Films Junior high school classroom. CU young boy Don, looks a bit scruffy. Don waking up as tyrannical narrator proceeds to point out exactly what he could have done to be neater & cleaner accompanied by a chirpy ‘50s score. Don drags himself out of bed as VO chides him for stalling. CUs Don takes shower, which we’re told should be once a day in summer “when you’re hot & sweaty,” or every other day in winter; “Remember your ears!”; CU scrubs nails - “You’re not clean if your fingernails aren’t!”; rinses soap off then washes hair, which should be done on the “same day every week”. “Keep rinsing until every bit of soap is out.” 18:19:39 Don dries himself, puts on tartan bathrobe, combs wet hair, checks teeth in mirror. Zoom in on areas of bathroom, POV to check he’s left it in a neat & clean state - “Cap back on shampoo!” etc. 18:20:36 Don in bedroom getting dressed, about to put on filthy shoes. VO “What you need is a shoeshine kit!” - one appears on floor; cut to Don wearing shiny shoes. Hanging up clothes - speeded-up shot of Don tidying up closet. Don checks himself in mirror, grins. CU of belt, shoes. 18:22:28 Cut back to previous Don in classroom looking scruffy by comparison. Similar procedure repeated for Don’s schoolmate Mildred. Mildred in front of dressing table mirror brushing long hair & putting it up in curlers so she won’t got to bed w/ wet hair. CUs filing nails & cutting toenails. Mildred picks up clothes off floor of messy room, “You’d better straighten it out this minute!”. Speeded-up sequence of tidying. VO repeating same advice about getting into habit. “Now that your room is neat, and you’re clean, isn’t it nice to get into bed?” 18:25:48 Mildred getting dressed in morning; CU of shoes. Brushing hair. VO “Brush, brush, & brush! At least a hundred strokes”. Vars shots zooming in on mirror as Mildred tries on different outfits. VO even criticises her choice of color. Tracking shot thru classroom past various kids to Don & Mildred at desks, presumably in their unacceptably sloppy pre-advice selves. VO “Keeping clean and neat is something we expect of everyone as a health measure, for ourselves and for our community...” Public Health. Hygiene. Appearance. Etiquette. Snobbery. 1950s Americana. Paranoia. Dress Fashions. NOTE: Sold at rate of one continuous minute at per reel rate.
