MS & CUs. 10:13:29 19Oct62 JFK getting into limousine on rainy night w/ Mayor Daley. 20Oct62 Press Secretary Pierre Salinger at microphones in front of White House, SOF: “On arrival back in Washington Dr. ?? examined the President again, the temperature has subsided, it is only 2 tenths of a degree above normal, but the doctor has proscribed for the President rest & the President plans to spend the day in his quarters at the White House. One of the prime considerations in the cancellation today was the fact that the bulk of the activities were outdoors, and it was the feeling of Dr. Berkely (SP?) that it would be better for the President to cancel the schedule & return to Washington.” 10:14:33 Black 10:14:38 20Oct62 SOF Salinger to microphones, “The President has been forced to cancel the remainder of his weekend political schedule. Last night in Chicago, the assistant White House physician, Dr. George Berkeley, noticed the President’s voice was very husky. This morning when he examined the President he found the President had developed a slight temperature & that he was suffering from a minor upper respiratory ailment. The President therefore canceled his schedule for the rest of today & tomorrow & has returned to Washington & the White House. The President is in his quarters, I don’t know whether he’s in his bed or not.” 10:15:38 Reporter: “It has been suggested that national security affairs were possibly one of the reasons for the President’s returning, is there any truth in this?” Salinger: “The President returned because of his cold & because of the advice of his doctor.” Reporter: “Anything on medication being given to the President?” Salinger: “The President is receiving routine medication, salicylates & antihistamines. Reporter: “Will this cancellation this week & the President’s health affect campaigning for the next two weekends in any way? Salinger: “We do not anticipate any change in any future schedule. The President is still scheduled to leave Washington next Thursday on another swing which will take him into a number of states including California.” Reporter: “Is there any activity at all, that is any trips outside of the White House for the weekend?” Salinger: “That is correct.” Reporter: “Church tomorrow?” Salinger: “Well I would think that his health permitting he would, but that is something that will have to be assessed tomorrow morning.” “Thank you.” Reporters taking notes.
