Unto Thyself Be True Pt. 2 of 2 Kaiser car pulls into driveway & backs hard into another on; they drive off & man gets license plate. Good residential street scenes in Los Angeles. Bill argues, drops Art off, takes car home & puts it into garage; wipes paint off bumper. “Remember, not a word to anybody.” MCU Art scratching & shaking his head. 13:08:57 Family home, Bill is nailing shelves in basement. Says he’s stayed home to finish the shelves. “Its wrong if I do, & its wrong if I don’t!” 13:09:32 Wife: “Frank why are you so unfair to Bill?” Argue about how he’s treating the boy. Bill has nightmare, rolling around in bed hearing father’s sarcastic voice. Dreams of backing into other car. Wakes up calling out: “Mom, mom!” Mom comes in & they talk. 13:11:16 Morning, father reading paper; doorbell, mother answers & guy from police department comes in to talk to Mr. Hartwell, says his car was involved in an accident & not reported to police. “Impossible, you’re mistaken!” Explains that a witness “...reported two young boys in the front seat”. Bill on stairs hears, starts to go back up. Dad: “Did you drive the car yesterday?” Bill: “Me? Yesterday, the car? No it wasn’t me?...” Runs back upstairs. Cop wants to talk to Bill: “He’s tied up in a knot”. They are in the garage; Bill says he didn’t do the driving because I don’t have a license. “You wouldn’t want me to snitch would you?” “Okay then, it was Arthur Franklin.“ 13:14:12 Father & mother sitting on couch: “How did I know that Bill was saving up his money to buy me a present?” “Would that make any difference in the way an understanding father should treat his son?” “Of course not, it shouldn’t. What a fool I’ve been.” They are going down to the police appointment. 13:14:45 Two men talking at desk. They come into office & policeman introduces Mr. Burton. Bill called in, tells his folks: “It was all my fault, I drove the car; and I caused the accident too.” Mrs. Hartwell: “He’s really a good boy...please try to undertand.” “That’s exactly what we are trying to do! Understanding is the answer to all this!” “Folks, Mr. Burton is a member of the Interfath Religious Council...” role explained & policeman leaves; Burton explains that as a religious counselor he can take up where police leave off. Says to Bill: “You really violated one of the Commandments; you bore false witness against your neighbor...but worse than that you were untrue to himself...should consult w/ there parents.” Asks Bill to leave, explains to parents that they need to be more understanding.
