Pt. 1 of 2 Interiors of shelter which will house 59 people following attack - worried women. Two men who are running shelter at desk giving instructions. Woman handing round tea on a tray. Young woman reading as if from her diary on the events of the alarm & wondering if there will be a tomorrow. She asks her mother about her father & wonders if the sun is still shining above ground. Flash back to start of alarm, people coming down steps of underground shelter, doors closing. Crowds of people arguing & panicking / chaos. Manager of shelter calls for order & makes speech about conditions in shelter. Manager continues to tell people about facilities in shelter while young girls’ thoughts turn to the fear of others. Manager hands out registration forms. Electric lights fail which causes panic, people filling out forms. Manager tells people that the city they get their power from has “ been hit “; confides in one of his co-workers that they could experience fall out soon. 18:36:38 Young girl writing in diary - man gives instructions & information about shelter and jobs assigned to occupants. Water rations - supplies and stocks - safety precautions. Manager using megaphone to get peoples attention - then says there will be a broadcast by the Governor. He then explains what to expect in the next few days, how communications w/ other fall out shelters will be kept up - emergency precautions etc. Smoking banned, limited food and water, extreme temperatures, crowded conditions - someone asks him what will happen if their town is hit - manager says if this happens they won’t know anything about it so it is pointless to worry, the shelter is to contend with atomic fall out. People asking questions. 18:40:09 CU radio as announcement comes in from State Civil Defence Headquarters - Governor on radio says nation has been attacked w/ nuclear weapons. Broadcast cut short as further attack starts. Knock on door - policeman with drunk stranger asks if they can accept him into shelter.
