Vietnam War - 1966, Bombings Resume - President Blames Hanoi Aggression 08:25:13 President Johnson at desk. Aircrew w/ bombs under wings of fighter bomber; on aircraft carrier moving bombs to Navy planes; planes w/ bombs on folded wings. 08:25:40 Army construction trucks; military base, troops moving into jungle. Aircraft taking off on land & aircraft carriers. View from plane at high altitude & bombs exploding over LBJ speaking (31Jan66): SOF: “On this Monday morning in Vietnam, at my direction, after complete & thorough consultation & agreement w/ the government of South Vietnam, the United States aircraft have resumed action in North Vietnam. They struck the lines of supply which support the continuing movement of men & arms against the people & the government of South Vietnam. Our air strikes on North Vietnam, from the beginning, have been aimed at military targets & have been controlled w/ the greatest of care. 08:26:45 Those who direct & supply the aggression really have no claim to immunity from military reply. The end of the cause does not mean the end of our own pursuit of peace. That pursuit will be as determined & unremittent as the pressure of our military strength on the field of battle. In our continuing pursuit of peace I have instructed Ambassador Goldberg at the United Nations to ask for an immediate meeting of the United Nations Security Council. He will present a full report on the situation in Vietnam & a resolution that can open the way to the conference table.” Entire speech underneath images of planes bombing etc., and United Nations & Security Council footage.
