CU of letter that she reads while petting dog. Calls her mother, she comes in & Mary asks for stamp. 01:23:35 Walks to mail box w/ dog on leash & mails the letter. Mailman comes up and gathers the letters from mailbox. He answer her questions about picking up mail. He says Mary should ask her mother to bring her down to see how the Post Office handles mail. 01:25:16 Mary & mother at Post Office watch him take mail out of van, men sorting the mail; gather and stack in same order. Canceling machine & letters automatically put through. CU of cancel. Man sorting mail puts her letter into pigeon hole, then bundles & puts into bag or pouch which is then taken to railroad station. Lock put on pouch. Mary & mother go to railroad station where incoming bags are unloaded & outgoing are put into mail car. Train leaves past them on platform. 01:29:25 Mail pouches emptied inside train car & sorted w/ other mail. Railway mail clerk sorting. 01:30:29 Train pulling into station. Steam engine. Truck delivering mailbags to post office & dumped & sorted again. Rural mail carrier picks up mail & gets into his car; along country road, exchanges mail at mailbox. Grandmother gets Mary’s letter out & reads it. 01:33:17 Grandmother at mailbox w/ package waits for mailman. Package costs 12 cents, she gives him 15 & asks him to leave the change the next day. 01:34:22 Inside the packages are weighed, stamped & put into pouches & again locked & sent to truck. At station pouches loaded onto train & man returns to post office w/ incoming mail. In Post Office packages sorted for delivery. 01:36:17 Mail carriers sort their route & put into their bags. All sacks of packages go into truck for parcel post delivery. 01:36:59 Mailman delivering city mail to porch. Mary gets letter saying the package is on the way. Mry leaves for school. 01:37:45 Parcel Post truck delivers package for Mary to her mother. Mary comes home & opens package. Takes dog for walk. 01:38:49 Town post office w/ flag flying. The End.
