Post-WWII - 1945, USA Government: General Eisenhower Takes Office As Chief Of Staff Intertitle: Gen. Eisenhower Takes Office As Chief Of Staff. 19:28:04 MCU Ike seated at desk talks to camera (SOF) re his new responsibilities; dismantling forces; solidifying peace. “I have taken over the duties of the Chief of Staff of the Army from a great predecessor, and of course, am honored by the selection. But I am keenly aware that I have taken over these duties at a critical time in the affairs of our nation & of the army. To win the war, you raised the greatest army in our history. We are now engaged in tearing down that machine at an unprecedented rate. At the same time, we have commitments in foreign lands, commitments which require real military strength. Those commitments were made in good faith to help solidify the peace that has been so dearly won. Very soon, those two processes will clash. This is your army, and it is your decision as to which course we shall pursue. It will be the duty of the War Department to carry out that decision. For my part, I hope that we firmly secure the peace. Post-WW2; Peacetime Reconversion; 1945; 1940s;
