R1 of 2 New York City harbor w/ ships anchored. Docks full of supplies; army truck lowered into ships hold & others goods loaded in slings. Converted two stack liner SS Manhattan. Sign: US Coast Guard Captain of the Port. Two men at desk talking over map, soldier w/ rifle marching on guard duty outside window. Large ship at dock, name on bow: Wakefield. Seen from another dock, 2-stack w/ small number 21. Men cleaning, painting, maill is loaded aboard, troops embark, rope cast off & stored & it leaves NY harbour w/ tugs. Navy blimp & shadow hovering over ship while still in coastal waters. 12:40:44 Men at rail; at sea - officers & crew working. Below decks engine room, radio room, crowded troop quarters; men smoking. Wash rooms & shaving. Army troops as passengers & coast guard crew. 12:42:39 Emergency drill or exercise - General Quarters alarm sounded & the ship's guns fire. Troops on deck relaxing, write letters; sleep. Coast guard big band playing jazz to entertain troops. Two soldiers dancing & jitterbugging. On board boxing match. Troops undergo physical training.
