Dug in Marines; damaged shrine , Marines walking thru other debris, one taking picture. Destroyed Japanese equipment. 10:21:47 Marine officers talking w/ 2-star General. 10:22:02 Two soldiers riding Japanese 3-wheel motorcycle truck along airstrip. Dead Japanese. Timbers frof barricade or ??, pan across airfield. 10:22:28 Heavy smoke from behind large mound & coastal gun w/ troops inspecting. CU coastal gun on beach. Reinforced concrete ??. 10:23:06 Plane overhead, atoll from landing craft, explosions along shoreline,landing craft moving in; men on board others watching from offshore. LS to shore; some showing men in landing craft. Wreckage of beached ship seen. 10:25:11 Officer watching w/ binoculars aboard landing craft w/ cameraman, other, PA 51-13, nearby. Amphibious tanks or LVTs towards shore w/ heavy smoke rising behind. Plane overhead. 10:25:47 Marine onto top of wrecked tank. 10:25:55 Pan destroyed trees along airfield. Damaged sandbagged Japanese position. LS tidal flat & tanks moving ashore & firing, low smoke behind. Pacific War; WW2; Horrors of War; Landing; Fighting; NOTE: Needs further identification & cataloging. Until confirmation by NARA cards location based on beached Japanese ship that appears to be same as on Tarawa identified landings. NOTE: Battle of Tarawa largely fought 20-23Nov43 & was first American offensive in the region. Sell at per reel rate.
