Longines Chronoscope With Henry F. Grady, 24Oct51 Opening commercial for Logines Wittnauer Watch Company. Main title: typewriter typing it out. A Television Journal of the Important Issues of the Hour 02:00:54 Frank Knight w/ Frazier Hunt co-hosting w/ William Bradford Huie, editor of American Mercury. Guest is Henry Grady, ex-Ambassador to Iran since Jun50 says the US was aware that something needed to be done to settle the oil question. Iranian govt. had before their Parliament a supplementary agreement, signed but not ratified, to one they had signed in 1933 which would increase royalties. Originally 13-15% royalties; supplemental would about double it to 25 to 30%. 02:03:15 Hunt: What royalites were we paying to Saudi Arabia? Well shortly after that we went to 50/50 basis which was an increase over what we had been paying (a considerable increase). 02:03:58 Huie: Were the British at fault that they weren’t meeting our terms? It wasn’t not meeting our terms but making a number of non-monetary concessions. Razmara became PM a few days before I arrived & he was anxious to get the supplement ratified. I believe if the British had given some non-monetary concessions...I mean employ more Iranians in the plants, matter of prices charged for oil w/in Iran, only 5% was being sold to Iran (thought they should have provided at same price as to British Navy & Air Force. 02:05:05 Huie: Did you urge the British to make those concessions? Yes....and this nationalization movement would not have started... Talk about British Labour Government not being very worried about nationalization. 02:06:15 Huie: By Nationalization do you mean confiscation? It shouldn’t mean that. Have the Iranians offered to pay the British for these properties? Yes, setting aside 25% of the proceeds for paying the British claims...but British think there won’t be any profits... 02:07:12 Grady: ...vital importance for the future...industrialization, warfare... aka industrialization 02:07:50 Hunt: “...biggest fear we have is the intrusion of Russia into this picture...how would Russia get this oil oul? Say we went from one failure to another & there was a coup d’etat... Grady talks about moving a considerable amount by trucks, ships etc. if a govt. friendly to USSR got in. But then says: “I don’t think Russia could get any of the oil.” 02:09:29 Huie: “...Mosaddegh is a visitor in the United States, do you know him...” “Extremely well...he’s extremely able, he’s a patriot...I think he’s misguided in the way he’s carrying out the Nationalization Program...may be very harmful to his country. I doubt the Iranians can operate this industry themself.” “...he’s not easily influenced by anybody. We’ve found that out. He’s the man who makes the decisions...” 02:11:44 Frank Knight closes show.
