MCU Very long machine across peat bog automatically cutting peat into bricks, moving them along conveyor & loading & dumping into railroad cars.
07:37:10 Local farmers / m en using shovels to load peat into wagons by hand; stop to rest. CU Young man picks up piece of peat turf / sod; decides to find out what happens to peat they cut. Electrical plant & cooling tower.
07:37:57 Small steam train pulling open freight cars of peat past. & man jumps aboard; runby.
07:38:22 Train into power station yard past large overhead bucket crane; man watches as cars of peat turf are hoisted by crane, moved & emptied.
07:39:31 Interior. Furnaces burning turf; man climbs to see turbines turned by steam to make electricity. Worker checking gauges in turbine hall sees young man & tells him to leave; then gestures to him, asks questions & offers a job. Young man walks out of plant and goes home.
07:41:40 Plant interior w/ man employed as ashman’s helper on night shift: moving & emptying cart of hot ash.
07:42:26 Young man also working on farm, wheeling turnips (?) in farmyard; father w/ cattle.
07:42:55 Walking to plant & inside walking past boiler controls - notices something wrong & changes dials - boss tells him off. Young man creeps back into house, wakes up father who thinks he has been out w/ girl & tells him its time to get up. “What time did you come in?” “We had quite a card game down at the pub.” Father says he understands, that he was young once. They go back to sleep
07:45:42 CU Wind up alarm clock on shelf next to tea pot showing 2:22. Peat fire burning in open hearth. 07:45:50 MCU Young man sleeping, tossing & turning. CU eyes open intercut w/ hand-held camera of dream sequence about power plant - dials, control panels. Interrupted by father knocking on door.
07:46:47 Man back at work; meets plant engineer who asks how he’s doing; suggests to young man that he get a form, have his father sign it and attend night school.
