MCU signals; engineer. 17:02:19 Pan across suburban houses; LS houses on hill. Two RR men talking on street look at watches; trackworkers off as train passes. 17:02:54 Montage: forklift & crates; freight car leaving; heavy machine; refrigerators hang; working on RR; trains. Superimposed books. 17:03:37 Kids play outside school; couple (Charlie Todd & Sally Kendrick) talking on sofa, mother fixing flowers. Railroad office, Tommy fixing up George Todd’s (boss) office tries to stand on swivel charge - boss points out safety slogans. Man comes in, gets lecture on accidents. George says he’s retiring & his nephew Charlie Todd will be working his way up. 17:07:06 Charlie giving Sally engagement ring, they stand & kiss. He: “I have a wonderful new job...” Misunderstanding. Sally & her mother think RR “messy”. 17:08:45 Charlie runs to work; across RR tracks; seen by Uncle George who calls him & gives him lecture: “You’re always laying down the law to grown men...I’m sick & tired of these lectures...” Leaves. 17:10:20 Mayor & woman from school board comes for talk on safety. Argue where is safer: RR, town or industry. They ask George to speak at high school graduation. 17:12:39 President of RR comes in & wishes George good luck on retirement. 17:13:47 Charlie walking thru RR yard. Uncle pulls out book thinking “My speeches have made trouble enough.” 17:14:39 Charlie w/ Sally, tells her he’s quit & they are all happy. 17:15:23 Uncle fishing, thinking; Charlie working in men’s clothing store - unhappy. Uncle come’s in & asks him if he’d like to go back on the RR. 17:17:26 George & wife, niece & nephew & her mother come in; wife asks George: “Why must you interfer...” “Oh Sally, don’t ever make a man choose between you & his career.” Argument broken up by Mayor’s arrival. Mayor & Uncle; argue then he agrees to speak at graduation on Voice of the Book. Continued...
