Wilton offers Collins money to get Buckley, then sits & smokes. Dispatcher calls. Map drawn. Miniature railroad shots of train at night being dynamited and falling off cliff intercut w/ Wilton & Collins talking; money given Collins. 13:54:05 Backlit train runby; cut to Millers inside. 13:54:19 Title: “At Webber -- 99 ready to leave.” Buckley greasing locomotive wheels, etc. 13:55:05 Telegraph, telegrapher & Johnny writes it down. Collins out of car in dark. Johnny gets message that arriving train has right of way over 99. CU, signal automatically set; Collins climbs tower & changes signal, CU of light. 13:57:02 Passenger train at night runby & signal light. Buckley’s engine at night, train past switching point; night runby of lighted train; Johnny telegraphs & dispatcher hears. 13:58:15 Animation of Morse code, spelled out message that train disregarded signal & that Johnny will take short cut on horse to flag train. Intercut train; horse running. 13:59:04 Esther & mother sewing; doorbell. Esther hides in next room. Wilton asks for Esther. Long shots of Johnny riding, miniature train at night. Wilton hunts for Esther. 14:00:48 Johnny rides up lane past camera, up hillside to stop train. Horse & Johnny fall down cliff; Johnny w/ injured leg crawls as he sees train passing. Lights fire in grass. 14:02:32 Wilton & Esther fight, Mrs. Buckley pulls him off. Pistol thru door in CU, Henry fires hitting Wilton in shoulder, (”my own flesh and blood” says Wilton). 14:03:33 Engineer sees hillside fire, stops train. Millers off w/ engineer. Buckley sees fire & also stops. Find horse and son who is delirious. CUs. 14:07:55 Title (dark): “And then -- a bright Spring morning - the happiest day of all”. Birds in flowering trees.
