The Telenews Daily - McCormick Sums Up 81st Congress 04:01:20 Senator John W. McCormick writing at desk, speaks to camera (SOF): “The 81st Congress, the first session thereof, has been a great success in the people’s interest. Under the leadership of President Truman we have done a remarkable job. Important legislation in connection w/ our international complications (sic) have been passed which will result in the stopping of Communism in its attempt to dominate the world. On the domesticate fields the outstanding examples have been housing & minimum wage, both designed to preserve the family life of America. The great problem confronting the people of the world, and confronting a large segment of our own people is the question of economic insecurity. Seventy million people in America are members of families that have a gross family income of $3,000 a year or less. This presents to Americans & to the Congress and all legislative bodies a challenge which we must meet! The President’s recommendations made in January are for a full Congress which comprises two years. It must be borne in mind that Congress meets again next January & much of the unfinished business of this session will be completed next year. But so far as this session is concerned it has been a remarkable success in the people’s interest. Summary; Politics; Anti-Communism; Economics; Post-WWII; Democrats; Cold War Statement; NOTE: First session ended 19Oct49.
