Title: Washington Headlines (Joe Martin on 1st Session, 81st Congress, 19Oct49) 06:58:32 Speaker of the House Joe Martin to camera, SOF: “It would probably be better to say that the first session of the Congress which closed today did not adjourn, it collapsed. I have been a member of Congress since 1925 & in all these years I have never seen a more disorganized, dispirited session of Congress than the one which quit today. Mr. Truman asked this Congress for 15 new domestic spending programs to be financed out of the general tax fund. And three welfare programs to be financed by taking more money out of the workers pocket. It is about the same program that Mr. Truman said could be enacted in 15 days when he called a special session of Congress following his address to the Democratic National Convention.” 06:59:31 CU: “The plain truth is that the Administration has been proposing for over a year that Congress vote the nation into a Socialistic State. And further truth is that Mr. Truman, so far, has been unable to sell either the 80th or the 81st Congress that we should abandon the American form of government & embrace Statism.” 1949; Domestic Program; NOTE: 1st session of 81st Congress closed 19Oct49.
