Skinny men down wooden plank steps; injured / wounded man carried on stretcher. Food packages passed otu. MCU. Thin men eating, smoking cigarettes. 12:18:54 Rescued men walking past on dirt road. Resting at evacuation hospital, laying on ground smoking. CU man w/ cigar stub / butt. 12:19:13 New clothes passed out. 12:19:21 MCU Man w/ one arm in thin tee-shirt walks past dabbing eye w/ handkerchief. 12:19:26 Men putting new socks & boots; get haircut. Smiling men past & in camp. Sgt. Samuel Ring of Wilksbarre, Pennsylvania w/ two Filipino sons. 12:19:53 SOF Corporal Cecil Hay: “You people do not realize how happy us boys were when we were liberated. I didn’t realize myself until we had arrived & saw the flag that was flying & then I had to break down & cry.” Sgt. Walter O. French from Arkansas: “About the only thing I can say is the last two years has been nothing but hell. One of the saddest days of my life was when I was taken prisoner, & the happiest day was when I was liberated by the Rangers.” 12:20:40 Sgt. Samuel Goldy (sp?): “Well we’re finally free Americans; it took ‘em three years but we’re sure glad to get out of there. The Rangers came in that night & it was about as happiest a sight as I ever have seen in my life. For three years we didn’t have, we couldn’t do anything w/o someone telling us what to do. Now at last we can do what we want, when we want to. We’ll sure be glad to get back to the United States where I’ll be a free American again & get myself a milkshake.” 12:21:08 Army trucks filled w/ released GIs past sign: 92nd Evacuation Hospital.
